The Witch Review

Directed By: Robert Eggers

Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie

Released in January 2015 to the unsuspecting crowds at the Sundance Film Festival The Witch got high praise and word of its creepy atmosphere and story got around. It bounced through festivals until it finally found a theatrical release in February 2016. Now was it worth the hype? Yes. Very much so. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted and holding back a lot… this movie stays with you and you may not know exactly why. This was a slow burn but totally worth the mind melting confusion it gives you. It took me a good rest, well not that good (I kept seeing things in the shadows), to figure out how much I enjoyed it. I thought it was going to be a gory “you must be scared!” type movie. But I was wrong. There are still shocking visuals that even made me feel a little uncomfortable, but this movie delves into the psychological. A must watch for horror fans, but you might not get it immediately.
